Rural Crafts Revival - Woodland Management

WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT OUT OF YOUR TRAINING?

Your training will be an exciting range of activities, taking place predominantly outdoors and almost in all weathers! Some of the things you will learn and undertake includes:

Study areas:

  • The study of the functions of woodland and
    woodland species
  • Be aware of the differing woodland species
  • Assess woodland for landscape and wildlife benefits
  • Be aware of the monetary value of woodland
  • Recognise the need for maintenance of woodland
  • Be aware of the principles involved in thinning
    woodland
  • Care for and maintain tools and equipment
  • Be aware of the need for correct safety procedures

Practical activities:

  • Tree and hedges identification
  • Hedge and Tree planting
  • Tree felling and coppicing
  • Conservation methods
  • Greenwoods crafts - pole-lathing, willow-weaving, charcoal burning and hurdle-making

Additional activities:

Whilst undertaking your five-day course, one of these days will be a 'complimentary' day. These days are road-trip styled days and are really exciting and fun and offer lots of new learning opportunities. You will be driven around as a group, to meet lots of artists, businesses and organisations, who through their work and activities, will demonstrate a range of career pathways and training opportunities unknown to you. You will be provided with your own camera and diary during your course, so that you can document your own training and experiences.
