What is dry stone walling?

Dry stone walling is the name given to walls that are constructed out of rocks of various sizes and types, and are termed as 'dry' because no cement is used in holding the wall together. Stones used in walling more often than not are gritstone, sandstone or limestone. Like hedges, walls through their 'style' of construction, techniques used and from the type of stone used, visually represent and characterise the geographic counties they are built in, and therefore, are distinctively different from county to county across the UK.

Dry stone walls in many ways are one of the most remembered features of the landscape, no more so than in areas such as the Peak District. We owe much thanks to features such as these, as they and their landscape encourage tourism, remind us of our history and heritage and are ideal habitats for wildlife and insects.

The weather was really cold but the tuition was brilliant and I really understood now what is involved in walling professionally.
