Projects
Rural Crafts Revival - Dry Stone Walling
WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT OUT OF YOUR TRAINING?
Your training will be an exciting range of activities, taking place predominantly outdoors and almost in all weathers! Some of the things you will learn and undertake includes:
Study areas:
- Appreciate the functions of drystone walls
- Appreciate the regional characteristics of drystone
walls - Assess drystone walls for landscape and wildlife
benefits - Care for and maintain walling tools
- Be aware of the need for correct safety procedures
- Be aware of basic drystone walling techniques
- Sort and select stone
- Undertake basic drystone walling construction
- Be aware of career opportunities in drystone
walling and associated activities such as landscape gardening, horse event course building, parks and gardens
Practical activities:
As with all training areas, you will undertake your
training on a 'real' site, and therefore what you work
on will ideally be of a permanent nature and therefore
your hard work will be available to be seen by all,
where possible. Most of this training will be practical,
and will involve you deconstructing a wall and rebuilding
the wall from scratch. You will be taught all of the
construction techniques, terminology and safe handling
procedures.
Additional activities:
Whilst undertaking the five-day course, one of these
days will be a 'complimentary' day. These days are
road-trip styled days and are really exciting and fun
and offer lots of new learning opportunities. You will
be driven around as a group, to meet lots of artists,
businesses and organisations, who through their work
and activities, will demonstrate a range of career
pathways and training opportunities unknown to you.
You will be provided with your own camera and diary during your course, so that you can document your own training and experiences.
